What is the Territorial Army (TA) of India?

The Territorial Army (TA) is a part-time volunteer force of the Indian Army, designed for employed citizens who wish to serve the nation in uniform without leaving their main job or business. It acts as a reserve force, supporting the Indian Army during wars, national emergencies, and natural disasters.

The TA allows patriotic Indians to fulfill their dream of serving the country while maintaining their civilian professions — a true blend of duty and discipline.

History and Purpose

The Territorial Army was officially founded on 9 October 1949. It was created to build a strong pool of trained citizens who can assist the Indian Army when required.

Key Objectives:

  • Support the Indian Army during war and internal security duties.

  • Provide manpower for essential services like transport, oil, and telecom during emergencies.

  • Assist civil authorities in disaster relief and maintaining law and order.

  • Encourage a spirit of national service among working citizens.

Role and Duties of the Territorial Army

Members of the TA serve both in peace and war times. Some of their major roles include:

  • Guarding vital installations and supply lines.

  • Assisting in disaster relief operations.

  • Supporting civil administration during emergencies.

  • Ensuring the smooth running of essential services like railways, oil refineries, and power supply
